How to Buy Huangshan Maofeng Without Getting Scammed
The Chinese tea market is vast and unregulated. Here's exactly what to look for — and what to run from.
Entry Level
$8-15 / 100g (standard)
Premium / Collector
$30-60 / 100g (pre-Qingming, high-altitude)
Quality Check
Leaves should bear the distinctive peak shape with white downy tips. Dry leaves are ivory-green with a slight golden tinge. Orchid aroma should be detectable in dry leaves.
Common Scams
Lower-altitude imitations from non-Huangshan areas. Leaves lacking white tips indicate either poor harvest timing or machine processing.

History
Where It Comes From
Grown on the mist-shrouded peaks of Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), one of China's most scenic areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The maofeng name refers to the tea's appearance: mao meaning downy/furry and feng meaning peak, describing the white-tipped, peak-shaped leaves. Another Top Ten Tea.
Ideal For
Green tea lovers seeking something between Longjing's nuttiness and Biluochun's fruitiness. Great afternoon tea.
